At Intarcia, our goal is to develop and commercialize drug therapies that deliver an improved therapeutic outcome while enhancing patients’ quality of life. We develop treatments that are more conveniently administered to optimize therapeutic benefits and reduce adverse effects for chronic and life-threatening diseases. Our exclusive approach is enabled by a novel implantable delivery technology, the DUROS® technology, that allows for constant and consistent delivery of a targeted level of drug exposure, achieving therapeutic drug levels while improving the side effect profile.

The field of biotechnology has afforded the discovery of novel protein- and peptide-based therapies for chronic, debilitating and potentially life-threatening diseases. Such treatments often require long-term therapy, frequent injections and induce side effects that may limit the treatment’s therapeutic potential. Intarcia’s drug development approach is unique due to our ability to stabilize macromolecules at human body temperature and to delivery them on a consistent, long-term and continuous basis, which allows for more convenient delivery of enhanced therapeutic benefits while reducing treatment limiting side effects. Further, should early withdrawal of therapy be required due to drug-related side effects, unlike most extended delivery formulations, DUROS therapies can be quickly and safely removed decreasing drug concentrations to undetectable levels within hours.

Developing Products with Significant Market Potential

Intarcia develops product candidates with demonstrated potential to deliver significant improvements over existing therapies. We focus on therapies addressing significant unmet medical needs and representing large commercial opportunities. The therapies we are developing:

Are based on validated mechanisms of action with proven clinical safety and activity;
Hold potential to represent significant improvements over the established standards of care;
May qualify for accelerated development and regulatory pathways such as 505(b)(2); and
Create proprietary product candidates, securing or extending exclusivity.

By targeting product candidates with validated mechanisms of action and existing safety and clinical data, our early clinical development risk is reduced. By delivering these product candidates with zero-order kinetics facilitated by DUROS devices, we believe we can deliver therapy with a truly optimized therapeutic index.

DUROS technology allows for drug delivery with zero-order kinetics. The benefits of DUROS delivery systems are:

Maximizing the Commercial Potential of Our Product Candidates & Technology

In 2009, Intarcia expects to complete phase 1 studies for both our type 2 diabetes program and our hepatitis C program. As we advance into phase 2 clinical development, we will evaluate partnering opportunities for the continued development and commercialization of these programs. As the DUROS technology is further validated through the clinical success of our hepatitis C and type 2 diabetes programs, we will evaluate additional proprietary drug candidates for development with DUROS delivery.

Intarcia continues to evaluate new opportunities for novel and proprietary product candidates, with efforts focused around two areas:

Evaluation of new DUROS products for which we can hold exclusive development and commercialization rights; and
Exploration of collaborative opportunities with partners to which our DUROS technology and expertise can lend enhancement of life-cycle management, product line extension or a competitive edge.
