At Intarcia, our goal is to develop and commercialize drug therapies which deliver an improved therapeutic outcome while enhancing patients’ quality of life. We develop treatments that are more conveniently administered to optimize therapeutic effects and reduce adverse effects for chronic and life-threatening diseases. Our exclusive approach is enabled by a novel implantable delivery technology, the DUROS® technology, that allows for constant and consistent delivery of a targeted level of drug exposure, achieving therapeutic drug levels while improving the side effect profile.
The field of biotechnology has afforded the discovery of novel protein- and peptide-based therapies for chronic, debilitating and potentially life-threatening diseases. Such treatments often require long-term therapy, frequent injections and induce side effects that may limit the treatment’s therapeutic potential. Intarcia’s drug development approach is unique due to our ability to stabilize macromolecules at human body temperature and to delivery them on a consistent, long-term and continuous basis, which allows for more convenient delivery of enhanced therapeutic effects while reducing treatment limiting side effects. Our team of dedicated professionals have extensive pharmaceutical and clinical development experience in various therapeutic areas as well as opinion leader and investigator network outreach.
Developing Products with Significant Market Potential
Intarcia targets product candidates which we believe we can develop into therapeutics with significant improvements compared to existing therapies. We focus on therapies addressing significant unmet medical needs and representing large commercial opportunities. The therapies we are developing:
- Are based on validated mechanisms of action with proven clinical safety and activity;
- Hold potential to represent significant improvements over the established standards of care; and
- Create proprietary product candidates.
By targeting product candidates with validated mechanisms of action and existing safety and clinical data, our early clinical development risk is reduced. By delivering these product candidates with zero-order kinetics facilitated by DUROS delivery, we believe we can deliver therapy with a truly optimized therapeutic index.
Capitalizing on the Advantages of the DUROS Technology
DUROS technology allows for drug delivery with zero-order kinetics. The benefits of DUROS delivery systems are:
- Elimination of peak drug levels often associated with unwanted drug side effects;
- Elimination of trough drug levels which can lead to gaps in drug efficacy, reduced levels of therapeutic effect and treatment failure;
- 100% adherence to therapy, which can lead to improved treatment outcomes;
- Enhanced patient convenience; and
- Extended exclusivity for improved proprietary pharmaceutical products.
Maximizing the Commercial Potential of Our Product Candidates & Technology
As the DUROS technology is further validated through the clinical success of our hepatitis C and type 2 diabetes programs, Intarcia will prepare for the commercialization of these products. Intarcia intends to build its own commercial organization in the U.S. and to explore commercial and development opportunities with potential partners in the U.S. and abroad.
Intarcia continues to evaluate new opportunities for novel and proprietary product candidates, with efforts focused around two areas:
- Evaluation of new DUROS products for which Intarcia can hold exclusive development and commercialization rights; and
- Exploration of collaborative opportunities with large pharma and biotech companies to which our DUROS technology and expertise can lend enhancement of life-cycle management, product line extension or a competitive edge.
